5 Things I wish someone would have told me before becoming an AuPair

First of all, I would like to say that I loved the experience as an AuPair and the opportunities it gave me. I met loads of new lovely people, got to experience London in a way a tourist never gets to, and I visited a few more other cities in England ( BrightonBournemouthBirmingham, etc).
But there are a few things that come with the job as an AuPair that no one really talks about. The job is a lot harder than most of you guys would imagine. It is now around the time of the year where a lot of German students decide on what to do after their graduation. For all of you who are thinking about becoming an AuPair, I would love to list a few points that can help you decide whether you would like to become an AuPair or not.
And for all of you guys reading this post purely out of curiosity what my life was like in London, enjoy! :)

What are set work hours? As an AuPair one lives at their work place. It is usually pretty clear when one has to work and when one is off. I usually woke up at seven, worked till eight and was then off until around 1Pm or 3Pm, depending on when the boys finished school. But from then on, my work day was an open-end. It was normal for me to finish around half seven or eight but it all depended on when my host-mom got the kids to go to sleep or when my host-dad got back from work.
At the same time, I had the week-end off. But it was a common thing for me to wake up, go down-stairs and still be asked to help out with the kids a little bit. It didn't really bother me and I would have never said no but living at your work place means that your host-parents can ask you to work whenever they want to and you are never really finished.

You're basically a teen-mom. When the concept AuPair was born, it meant that one would be more of a mothers-help than anything else. One would get small duties (like doing laundry, cooking every now and then) and the work hours weren't that much either. One would maybe help an hour in the morning and three to four in the afternoon. But other than that one would have a lot of spare time to explore and meet up with friends.
Nowadays being an AuPair is basically the same as a nanny. Most host-parents leave for work early and come back late in the evening, leaving the AuPair alone with the kids for basically the entire day. They expect you to do everything a parent would usually do with the kids (homework, eating, school runs, play-dates, hobbies, etc.) and have everything scheduled perfectly. Most host-parents also expect you to do the laundry and clean the house regularly as well - I was lucky that mine had a cleaning lady. But still I always worked 35+ hours each week.

One's social life gets rather non-existent. Don't get me wrong, I have great friends in London and we went out regularly but the time-frame during which one can do so is rather limited. It's either in the morning when the kids are in school or when the kids are asleep in evening - if you don't have to babysit. There were days where I would leave the house at half eight in the evening to meet up with friends at Starbucks or in a pub just so that I did not spend my day with just the boys.

Or sleep for that matter. Another thing is sleep or just simple me-time. During the five months that I was in London, I did not once have a day during which I got to actually sleep in or just do nothing. Either one is working or using the time off to meet up with friends. Not once did I regret choosing friends and going out over sleep but I am now realizing that this time was also very stressful.
Sometimes my AuPair friends and I would be in a pub on a Friday night at 12PM and thinking about just going home and falling into our beds instead of actually heading out to the next pub and enjoying our selfs a bit more - basically the same problems parents probably have! ;)

True friends are always there for you. One thing that I learned during that time is that true friends are always around if you need them. They accept the choices you make and always support what's best for you. There were so many days that were just plain crappy and I needed someone to talk to. I would just text one of them and we would meet no matter what time in a Starbucks or pub and all just complain about our days! ;)

Even though most of this sounds rather negative, I would never ever not recommend becoming an AuPair. One should just know that it's not always fun and games and that it actually really is a tough job.

Sad news...

When I left Germany this summer to take on this job in London, I would have never thought that I had to write anything like what I have to now. This decision was made about a month ago and the reason why I am only now writing about this is that I wanted to tell most of you guys in person. But for all of you, who I did not have the chance to talk to this winter break: I am moving back to Germany next week on Thursday. I do not want to go into detail about any of this on this blog out of respect for my privacy and my host-families. All that is important is that we still have a very good relationship and we'll definitely stay in contact.

I already have plans for what I will be doing when I am back in Germany and I will tell you more about that in a new post. Since I really enjoyed writing on this block, I will keep up with writing regularly and there definitely are some exciting things coming up.

For now, I'll be enjoying my - for now - last week in London.

Exploring Birmingham

This Saturday, we went to Birmingham. Birmingham is a city almost in the North of England. Luckily, it only takes about two and a half hour to get there by coach. Two of my friends and I met up quite early at Victoria Coach Station in Central London and hopped on a coach to Birmingham. As we were all fairly tired from going to bed late and waking up early we used the bus-ride to catch up on some sleep.

Personally, I don't think Birmingham is as exciting as London. It isn't even half as big and I wouldn't describe it as beautiful. Still, there was loads to see and we enjoyed our trip a lot. One of the things I loved the most was the "Frankfurt Christmas Market".

Brighton

Ever since I watched a German movie called "Schutzengel" (engl.: Guardian Angel), I've had a bit of an obsession, which only grew bigger while watching Zoella's Youtube videos, which show Brighton.
From the day I set foot on UK-ground I wanted to visit Brighton. Finally, last weekend that dream became reality. Megan, Bibi, Isi, Matt (all living in Marlow, where Megan lives and all AuPairs except for Matt) and I drove down to the coast.

Friday evening after I was done working, I hopped on a train headed to High Wycombe, where Megan picked me up. Together we first headed to her current home to get dressed and ready for the night and then went on to a friend of hers. We had a lovely night during which I got to meet some of her friends. Including four boys that aren't even AuPairs but true British fellas. ;)
After a night with only two hours of sleep, we then headed for Brighton. Matt, one of the boys, drove and we were more than lucky to have him with us as we would find out later during our trip.

The weather was absolutely amazing. The sun was shining throughout the entire time and it wasn't even as cold as you'd expect it to be at the end of November. We spend most of our time on Saturday at the Pier since it is the most famous attraction in Brighton.
From here on, I'm just gonna let the pictures speak for themselves. :)

For the night we had booked a hotel about 20 minuets away from Brighton since it was a lot cheaper. Since we didn't stay in Brighton on Sunday but went on to another town along the coast, I'll be putting up another post with those pictures soon!

Happy Thursday!

It's getting christmacy

Tuesday morning, Sade and I went out for some coffee. We were seated over-looking Kingston's market place. Last week a christmas market was opened there and it looks very lovely! Quite small but very German and one can finde anything one would also find on a German Christmas Market.
We strolled along the stalls and quickly decided that we had to come back with our girls soon to have some hot cider.
