A week with my brother

As I already told you guys in my last post, I had my brother over for a week. It was his first trip to London, so we left the house early and came back really late everyday. We went out exploring the city and had loads of fun, which is why I didn't post any thing during the past few days.
Since I had to send my brother back to Germany on Tuesday I have now time to give y'all a quick summary of everything we visited.

Kingston:

Since my host-parents invited Lars to stay with me, he definitely had to see Kingston as well. It's not really big, so it only took us about an hour for him to see the most important parts but he liked it.

King's Cross Station

One thing he really wanted to see was King's Cross and Platform 9 3/4 and the Harry Potter store. We went there and explored a bit. He didn't take a picture with the cart going through the wall because we would have had to wait for more than 30 minuets.
From there on, we walked to Camden and visited the market.

Covent Garden

While visiting Covent Garden, we once again followed one of the Big Bus Tour. We didn't really stick to the route for too long but we found some nice ones.

Buckingham Palace

The day we visited Covent Garden was really busy. We first walked to Leicester Square afterwards - I didn't take any pictures there that day - and then went on to Buckingham Palace. In a little park, on the left hand side of Buckingham Palace, is where we had lunch that day: a 3 Pound Meal Deal.

Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament

When walking through the park one automatically comes to the Houses of Parliament and Downing Street, where the Prime Minister lives. it is highly secured by police officers, so one can only see into the street through the gate and only residents or staff are aloud through the gate.

South Banks

When the weather is nice, there's nothing better to do than walking along the Thames. We came across a skate park and also this really cute bus which was turned into a Frozen Yogurt shop.

Big Ben & Westminster Abby

An obvious must-see in London is Big Ben and Westminster Abby. We also went there during the evening, so he got to see the London Eye and Big Ben lit up.

Primrose Hill

One of my favorite parts of London in Primrose Hill, which meant that I had to bring Lars here no matter what. We actually were really lucky and on the day we went it was sunny, so it was absolutely beautiful and the view was perfect.

The Tower Bridge & The Tower of London

Rugby and Football

On Sunday, Megan invited us to a Rugby match. Neither her nor any of us had ever been and we didn't really know what to expect. It was loads of fun and in some ways similar to American Football but the rules are a lot different and I haven't even started to understand half of them.

On our last day, Lars wanted to visit one of London's many soccer stadiums. We decided to go to Arsenal because it was the closest. It wasn't possible for us to go on the pitch but we walked around the stadium and payed a quick visit to the fan shop.

We had a lovely time together and I can't wait to see my family again at Christmas. And even though he enjoyed being here, he was just as happy to go back to Germany as he doesn't really enjoy living in a big city.

Sibling bonding time in London

Hey guys!

Yesterday, Alexa and the kids left for Germany where they're going to spend most of their fall break. But for the time being I don't have to stay in this house alone... I've got my brother with me! He arrived just about ten minutes after the other three left - so unfortunately they didn't get to meet but he did meet Alex though.
It's my brother's first trip to London, so we're definitely going to visit all the tourist attractions.
My brother had been up for quite a long time, so we didn't do much yesterday. But one the way home we took a quick trip to the O2-Arena as well.

The first sight we visited yesterday was the "Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park". This is an area entirely created and built for the 2012 London Olympics. It includes four stadiums, the athletes village and a large leisure area. I hadn't been there before either, so it was something new to discover for both of us. Katharina found a tour on the internet during which one follows the red busses I mentioned in my last post. We had loads of fun and it was a good way to actually see all the important parts of the Olympic village, stadiums, etc.

The first view one gets is of the athletes' accommodations. They look very modern and there is so many of them that it makes it even harder to understand just how many people are involved in the Olympic Games.

To finish off the day, we enjoyed a nice frozen yogurt.

New experiences in London

Hi guys,

this Saturday was very eventful, in the way that I got to explore loads of places in London where I hadn't really been before.
I started the day off by meeting Katharina and Christine in front of the O2-Arena and showing them around (okay yeah, that wasn't really a new thing).
But afterwards we took the tube to Covent Garden and discovered a market, which we explored for a little while.

From there on, we tuned onto a shopping street with a lot of very expensive shops. There was Burberry and Chanel to just name a few of the brands.

Covent Garden is famous for its many theaters and musicals. One can watch "The Lion King", "Charlie and the chocolate Fabric" there and many more.

When Megan and I were in Bristol last summer, they had a charity event where famous artists would paint huge Grommet status which were then put up around the town. After about a month, I think, they were than auctioned off and all the money went to charity.
The same charity event is now taking place in London as well, just with Red Busses. So far, these two were the only ones I could find.

You gotta give some credit to the British: Every time I go to Starbucks, they spell my name right. Sometimes they don't even manage to get it right in Germany. :)

A bit of culture

Hey y'all,

The last weekend was almost completely spent in Central London. I was on an African Festival, went to Primrose Hill, finally got to visit the Science Museum, and once again went to the movies.

On Saturday I met up with Annika, an AuPair who lives in Kingston as well, and a friend of hers. From Waterloo we walked to Trafalgar Square (about 15 minuets) because we wanted to attend an African Festival. When we got there, we were kinda suprised by how small it was. It took us about thirty minutes to explore all the stalls.

Since the weather was really good on Saturday, we then decided to take a bus to Primrose Hill. I quite often read that while standing on top of Primrose Hill one would have the nicest view over London. And we were not disappointed.
It took us about five minuets to walk all the way to the top and the view was really lovely. One could see the London Eye, and just generally a lot of sights close to Westminster.
Primrose Hill is also famous for having a lot of stars live there, so we then started venturing into the direction of the homes of the famous and rich. We didn't get to see anyone in particular but the houses were beautiful! If I should ever have enough money to buy a house in this area, I'll definitely be living there. But you can see for yourself in the few photos I took.

Between the tree and the car were abut 3 inches.

On Sunday I went to the Science Museum with Katharina. Here in London most of the museums are free, so when we tried going last week-end there were way to many people to properly enjoy the experience so we went again this week. It was a lot of fun and the entire museum reminded me a lot of the "Deutsche Museum" in Munich. I especially loved the parts about medicine and psychology.
It took us about two hours to go through everything we were interested in. Afterwards we spontaneously decided to go to the movies as we both still wanted to watch "Gone Girl". I recently finished the book and was amazed by it. I you don't know what it's about check out the trailer here.

Svenja
